“At one point in high school, I had the thought that I still come back to: “If there are so few people like me out there, that means I have a lot to learn about everyone else.” It may seem a simple thought, but it’s shaped my entire life. Growing up, I’ve seen and heard stories about how members of my family have shown up for each other, in their way: big or small, openly or discreetly, sometimes unconsciously and other times at just the right time. These moments and countless others I’ve experienced or seen in black and brown communities back home, in queer and trans spaces and within mutual aid networks, shape the way I want to show up in the work I do and support.
